Before sharing more on how to change a water heater anode rod, let us first ask the question why would you need to change that part?
The anode rod delays rusting and corrosion and extend the life of your water heater.
This is why the thickness of your anode rod is related with the amount of years you get with your guarantee. The ticker the rod is, the more years are added to your guarantee and it can reach up to 12 years with the widest rods.
Once the rod is fully defeated by corrosion next is the body of the unit and this can explain why the guarantee usually expires after 6, 9 or 12 years accordingly.
3 Main reasons for the process of corrosion:
1). Oxygen and moisture
2). Are you currently not getting enough boiling water?
3). Heat
By replacing your anode rod you are literally extending your water heater’s life.
We recommend replacing your rod once per six years. If you are not sure what’s the current state of the rod your best decision might be reminding your plumber to check the its state during the yearly maintenance drain service.
A couple of anode rod insights to have in mind:
There are two types of anode rods: one with a hex head and one with a nipple that goes into the hot water.
There are 3 options for material:
Aluminum – interchangeable depending on the brand
Magnesium – interchangeable depending on the brand
Zinc aluminum – for water sources with sulfur, a.k.a. ‘smelly water’
The whole is the same size and all heaters, but some rods are longer and thicker going off the model.
Serial number is the best way to ensure a proper fit.
The solution for the limited space above the heater:
If limited space above the heater prevent the installation of a standard anode rod you can purchase and install the collapsible type.
Basic Instructions for Installing a New Water Heater Rod:
Turn off the water in fuel supply (gas or electricity) to the water heater.
Partially drain the water heater around 6 inches just to give access, but keep weight in the tank.
Locate the anode rod on the water heater.
If necessary unscrew and lift off the cover of the top of the heater (optional)
Use a ratchet wrench and 1 & 1/16 inch deep socket to unscrew the anode rod from the heater:
if it is the nipple type you will need an adjustable wrench;
if the enel type doesn’t budge then slip a steel pipe onto the ratchet handle for extra leverage.
6. Lift out and discard the old anode rod.
7. Wrap teflon tape around the threads of the new anode rod, insert it into the water heater and tighten with 1 1/16 inches socket.
8. Turn the water and fuel supply to the water heater back on and you are done.
To make it even easier for you we are always available to do the replacement for you. Just call (858) 699-3185 and get yourself scheduled for an anode rod replacement.
We’ve done this hundreds of times and our loyal clients are a great testament for the quality of our service.

If you are currently choosing between tankless and a traditional hot tank water heater, let us share our observations on the common myths about the tankless units.
No Really Saving Money
Many people are concerned about their old tank water heater costing them extra money in monthly utility bills.
We see it a trend – a large group of people let numbers mislead them. This is also do to the huge amount of informational brochures stating the facts that they are saving from your monthly bills.
But let’s take a look at an example. Below you’ll see a typical Energyguide label you can find on a tankless water heater stating that for an average family this is going to consult $225 per year. If we divide that by 12 and circle up we’ll get to a $19 per month cost in gas propane.
Let’s compare that to what the usage on a traditional tank might look like.
You can find a label like the one below on a typical 2010 Rheem model.
Let’s compare that to what the usage on a traditional tank might look like.
As you can see it say $315 for a year and natural gas use for an average family.
Divided by 12 and the number will give us a cost of $26 per month.
The difference in energy savings is about $7 per month, but think twice – are you really saving these money.
Consider the typical replacement and or installation fees and you’ll quickly realize that the argument for saving money on the brochures is actually misleading.
Instant Hot Water
Instant hot water is another typical myth flowting around tankless water heaters.
The units are often referred to instant hot water heaters. In fact it’s not really ‘instant’. You don’t have instant hot water at your sink, do you?
So when you turn on the faucet when you’re only dump in a cup or two of water down before it gets hot, but this is the way to get instant hot water.
Maintenance
The third kind of myth is related with the maintenance. A lot of people say the tankless hot water heaters are maintenance-free – just set it and forget it.
Without a water softening system, a tankless water heater is going to need either an annual or a bi-annual flush depending on your use. Indeed, with a water softener, you’re not going to do this very often at all, maybe never. A typical maintenance costs about $150 if done once per year which you won’t need on the same level with a standard tank.
In the next blog post we are going to cover the three real reasons for investing in a tankless water heater.

]]>
If you find a pool of water underneath your water heater what do you do? In this blog post we’ll try to give you basic instructions and steps with short explanations.
It might not be a leak
The first thing you need to consider is that it might not be a leak. Water heaters tend to produce condensation on the tank. So the first thing you want to do is just check the tank for any moisture. If you find some then this could be the cause for the leak.
If you didn’t discover any moisture, it’s advisable to look somewhere else.
It might be a plumbing fixture or a pipe
The next thing to consider is that you may have a leak somewhere else. Water heaters are usually surrounded by other plumbing fixtures and other pipes. So one of those might be leaking, check those for any possible leaks.
If not, then your water heater might be the real source for the leak.
The first thing to do is shut off the power. If you have an electric water heater, locate your circuit breaker panel. There should be a switch for the water heater. If you have a gas water heater like, then you want to locate the pilot and turn it off.
If you experience a serious leak, the next step is going to be to turn off the cold water supply. The shut off valve is usually located above the unit and it’s often a red handle.
You would turn to the side and set it off. You may also find a gate valve and a dial that you’ll need to turn. Clockwise to close. Just be careful about hot water. It can get very hot up 290 degrees Fahrenheit. This can cause serious burns.
So if you can’t get to the water shut-off valve safely, you want to locate the main shut off valve of your house and turn that off.
What to do if leak isn’t serious
Now if the leak isn’t serious and you’re not sure exactly where the leak is coming from you may want to leave the water on just for now so we can investigate a little bit and try to locate the source of the leak. The first place you want to check are the inlet and outlet pipes leading from your hot water tank.
Loose connections?
It may just be a loose connection that you just need to tighten up. Not a serious problem. So check there first.
The next place you’ll want to check is the temperature and pressure relief valve, which is located on the side of the tank. This valve is designed to let out water if there is too much pressure or the water is heated too much. So if it’s leaking from here, it’s possible that the tank got too much pressure.
Check around the edges of the valve to make sure it’s watertight. The valve itself should follow the pipe to the floor and see if there’s any water actually leaking out of the valve down below. In this case your valve might be faulty or like mentioned above, there may be too much pressure in the tank.
Drain valve
The next place you want to check is the drain valve. This is used to drain or flush. The water heater again life not faulting is working properly.
Bottom
Finally, we want to check the bottom of the water heater. This is where most leaks appear.
If you have a leak coming from the bottom of your tank, it’s likely that you have an internal problem with your water heater. In this case, most likely you will have to Water Heater Replacement once you diagnose leak, shut off the cold water supply if you haven’t already and call a professional plumber.

If you are not sure if you need a water heater pan, the short answer is YES. There are a couple of main arguments we advise our clients purchasing pans. Read more in the paragraphs below. As always, we are at your disposal at (858) 699-3185 if you have any specific questions not answered in this blog post.
Let’s Start with the ‘What’
What are water heater pans?
A water heater pan is a relatively simple device. it’s a simple pan mounted underneath your heater. must models come with a drain hole for attaching a pipe for removing leaking water.
What happens is that the liquid runs down the pipe and goes into a drain placed nearby which prevents the room from damage.
Uncap the pan and fit with the correct pipe when installing it.
The majority of the models have PVC pipes, but this is not always the case.
Regardless the materials used most of them will usually do the job and they are pretty low cost devices to have.
Here are a couple of reasons why we think buying a water heater pan is a good investment:
It prevents from water heater damage
Of course water damage can cost you much more than the price you would pay for a pan. Sometimes this may cause mold if you delay removing the leak appropriately.
Just be aware that this is not an automated solution preventing you from water damage.
Warning:
There are cases when a water heater May leak at the drain valve and the water pressure may cause the water leak to shoot pass the water pan. This is how even having a Pan won’t save you from the damage.
We could conclude that these devices are necessary, but they’re still great to have.
Important:
Pans work best if you really are able to provide a place to discharge the water. Otherwise you may just catch a very small amount of water and the rest may just end up on your floor.
How to choose the right type of pan of your water heater?
If you never had a pan before you may be actually shocked by the variety available in stores. there are really a large number of pans. You can take a look at the basic types below and we believe this might help you determine which is the right one for your heating device.
Plastic water heater pans
The plastic models are usually produced with heart black plastic. They might save you but there are better choices available.
What stick is just very vulnerable to various factors. A change in temperature could damage them; they could melt or break for different reasons. You may experience Leek but unaware of it for a long time I’m with a device like this.
Plastic water heater pan
Aluminum pans
The aluminum pans are the better alternative of the plastic models. One of the main advantages is that they are more reliable but still affordable. The pans are also highly resistant to corrosion.
Aluminium water heater pan
Steel pans
The third kind of pans are the steel ones – they are but highly durable and more expensive.
If you choose Steel better end up with a really good model that won’t rust. A rusty pan might be a recipe for a rusty heater in the near future, so be careful as it might cause you troubles.
Fiberglass water heater pans
These are easy to maintain and have glossy finish. The fiberglass pans are really easy to clean too. You can find them in the same stores among the other models.
Now you already know what kinds of water heaters are available on the market. will finish this work past helping you choose the right size.
Picking the correct size
Measure the diameter of your water heater – this is the most correct way to discover what size will fit. Once done, think of the space around the heater as well.
Choosing a pan made for just a bit bigger unit is something we recommend. An extra 2 inches can contribute a lot if you experience a leak.
Pan depth is the next feature to think of. there are deeper pants but the idea is not to quote all the 40 gallons of water. If this happens it’s a sign you need a replacement. You will be fine with a model that is less than 4 inches deep. What matters a lot is the nearby drain that needs to be connected with the pan.
Of course not everybody can afford having a pipe attached. In this case a deeper than can actually help a bit more. or just make sure you check the pan more regularly for possible leaks.

In this blog post we’ll try to answer the question:
Is it Worth Switching from Gas to an Electric Water Heater?
In fact you’re not actually switching, you’re replacing. These are just different types of water heating devices. It’s not an easy task to conclude with 100% confidence which option is better.
In the next couple of paragraphs we’ll review a couple of advantages and disadvantages
Disadvantages for replacement
Too complicated and involves too many steps:
discontinuing the gas line and vent
resizing your chimney (not every time)
Installing a liner
You may also have to get assistance from an electrician for evaluating the current electric service and find out if your panel will be compatible with the heater’s extra load.
The next important job would be to install two things – an electrical line to the location with the line hooked up.
Once this is done it’s the plumber’s obligation to re-connect the water tines to and from the device.
There are a few other things that need to be done as well.
You may find yourself doing much less and for significantly lower price if you simply replace the gas heater with another gas heater.
This is less popular among homeowners as they consider maintaining a gas heater As much easier kind of responsibility. The gas bills are also often cheaper than the ones you would have with an electric water heater. It’s a kind of insurance that you will always have hot water unlike the case with the electric device when there is no electricity.
Talking about costs, in fact, water heating is the second largest home expense. But not everyone is calculating the same way and sometimes bills with an electrical heater might be lower.
Advantages of replacing your gas water heater with electric water heater
Your water heater on average accounts for approximately 15% of utility bills. This is a stat taken from the US Department of Energy.
According to the same department, electric water heaters are energy efficient compared to the traditional gas water heaters. It’s explained by the fact that with the gas devices heat is lost via vents while with the electric ones there is no extra loss through pipes. This is how you save money on your utility bills.
It would be best to consult with a local warmer before you take your final decision. It’s this guy or a company that usually has enough data to come up with relevant advice.
If you are still in docked which plumpany company to choose cooling, we will suggest you consider VLN Water Heaters as one of the most reputable contractors known for it’s great customer service and fair pricing.

You wouldn’t be surprised being on a plumber’s blog and reading suggestions for plumbing gifts for your mother this upcoming Sunday for Mother’s Day, would you?
In fact, regardless of the fact if you’ll celebrate it or not, you might still find value in the paragraphs below.
Here’s a quick list of fixes you should be able to do on your own:
Replace the shower head
You’d need a new shower head and pliers (the wide mouth type).
Just remove the old shower head with the pliers and replace it with the new one. I recommend putting a rag over the spot base. Tighten the head with the pliers with a small number of quarter turns. Check for leaks and if needed continue tightening the shower head with ¼ inch at a time.
For a makeover on a higher level you could replace the the arm and flange as well.
All you’d need is vinegar, baking soda and boiling water.
Here are the instructions taken from the same blog post:
Replacing the old faucet with a new one
If you mother needs a new faucet think of surprising her with an upgraded model of a faucet. Here’s a great guide from ConsumerReports.org. Many of the models nowadays are really easy to install. This one requires a bit more experience and preparation, so if you are limited in time and budget try to look for something more applicable for the moment.
Bonus gift – replacing the old heater with a tankless water heater
If your mother has a traditional conventional storage water heater there’s an option for upgrading to a tankless model. If you believe now it’s time for that already you can count on our help to do it properly.
All these plumbing fixes are a stunning way to express your love and are a great practical gift themselves. While doing your inspection you might cross on real plumbing issues. In most of these cases your mother will be thankful if you just call a professional plumber.
Conclusion:
Regardless the occasion and the person who it is for, a little more attention will be always appreciated.
Finding a way to show your attention could be both fun and creative process, but even simpler actions do pretty well.
On behalf of everyone at VLN Water Heaters, I wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day!
